EXCLUSIVE: Summer Fox says she was forced to hide her sentimental neck tattoo when she became a police officer – but she later left the force to pursue a very different career

A former cop turned Babestation phone sex model says she had to cover up her sentimental neck tattoo to join the force.

Lana Huckaby, 31, had a small Christian cross inked behind her ear as a way to remember her grandfather after he died.

But, before becoming a Police Constable at Hertfordshire Constabulary, she claims she was ordered to change it to a snowflake to be less discriminatory.

Lana had wanted to be a police officer since she was a little girl and therefore covered up her tattoo in order to be granted her police search assessment exam.

Agreeing to remove the cross landed her the dream job – but she later quit after two years to return to webcamming.

Remembering the body art controversy, she told Daily Star: “When I was at the recruitment stage at the police they wanted me to change my tattoo from a cross to a snowflake.

“They said it was sort of discrimination because I am picking one religion over the other and they said it was not acceptable in the police.

“I felt it was a bit mad and I got upset because I got the tattoo when my grandad died to remember him because he was quite religious and he meant a lot to me and that is why I got the tattoo.

“I did get upset when they told me to change it. People can wear hijabs and wear head dresses but people who have a cross tattoo you can’t just cover it up with a bandage or something.

“To be honest I didn’t actually want to change it to a snowflake – I wanted to keep the cross because it was quite a meaningful tattoo to remember my grandad.

“I had to come up with the idea to cover it and I had to give them the pictures of what I wanted to cover the tattoo with and had to show proof after it was done as well.”

Lana has a Christian background and her father and brother are both pastors – but she is now publicly known by her stage name Summer Fox. She moved to the UK from America in 2011 before securing a role on the front line patrolling the streets of St Albans in 2019.

Before that she worked as a webcam girl and as for what inspired such a dramatic career switch, she said: “So since I was about eight-years-old I’ve always wanted to be a police officer. I’ve always wanted to tackle crime.

“I was a Police Constable answering 999 calls and the thing I miss about it is helping people and making them feel comfortable that they’re safe and that they are being heard.

“If you go on the street and ask people what they think of the police they’ll say they don’t trust them because of the stuff that’s obviously been in the news about officers.

“But I wanted to be a police officer where people would come up to me and they knew they could trust me. So for me it was a way of doing good.”

Despite Summer's good intentions, it ultimately did not work out. She is now glad that she left her role to prosper elsewhere.

She said: “It wasn’t really what I expected. I wanted to go and catch criminals, all the good stuff basically. But where I worked there was a lot of traffic calls and you would get domestics and stuff. But I wanted a bit more action because you see in the States where it is always lively.

“I just thought it wasn’t for me and the pay wasn’t as good as you’d think it would be and I sort of missed the webcam stuff and that is how I ended up leaving the police. It is the flexibility for me and I just love being able to be my own boss.”

And although she remains disappointed about covering up her tattoo, she is still proud that she represented the force out in the field.

In response to this story, a Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesperson told us: “While we can’t discuss the HR and vetting process for individual candidates, all prospective police officers are asked to share photos of their tattoos and those on the face, neck or hands are considered on a case-by-case basis.

“The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Human Resources department reviews visible tattoos with a view to ensuring that officers and staff working in the police service present a professional image.”
