EXCLUSIVE: From a business owner with 14 face tattoos to an influencer who loves smoking weed, meet the mums who are branded ‘bad parents’ for refusing to follow convention
Being branded a bad mum can feel as painful as a punch to the gut – and it is something all the parents below can relate to.
But these women have had their motherhoods questioned for completely different reasons – from how they put food on the table to to the way they dress or look.
The five mums all opened up about the abuse they endure while explaining why being different should be respected rather than judged.

Racy mum
First up we have Laura Whyte, 30, who claims she was shunned by her community after selling sexy pictures got her off benefits and changed her family’s fortunes.
She described suddenly being the black sheep of her village in Aberchirder, Aberdeenshire, and one unimpressed mother even sent her a scathing warning about keeping her kids away.
Laura, who has two young children, told Daily Star: “I had a lot of people in the village who would purposely go onto my TikTok account and report it or they would give me hate messages about how they can’t wait to get me out of the village and what I do is disgusting.
“I have had messages saying I have to stay away from them and their kids just because of what I do. It was a girl from the village. She was just messaging me hateful, mean things about me and my kids.
“She was also messaging other people she sees me speaking to and moaning at them that they shouldn’t associate themselves with me. It is jealousy, not jealousy for how I look, just the fact I am able to make money and have the confidence to actually do it.”
The racy model, who said her little ones are “really sweet kids” and do not deserve discrimination, was living off benefits and her partner’s wages as a binman when she turned to OnlyFans in September 2021.
After bills and food were paid for, there was no money left to save for a deposit or holidays, but all that changed for Laura when she started banking up to £8,000 a month.
She said this has allowed her to give her children a better life. She explained: “We can book a holiday without having to worry about bills or anything like that, it has changed things dramatically. You wake up less depressed and there is less stress on your plate worrying about where you are going to get money from.
“It’s amazing, my daughter gets up every morning and says ‘I love you mummy, we are going on holiday soon’ and she just gets so excited.
“We were getting £40 a week on benefits when my son was born so it is nice for him to get the experience of holidays and things he needs and not have to worry about anything else and he can experience things he didn’t when he was younger.”
Cannabis mum
Cannabis-loving influencer Britt Hibbitts has her parenting criticised for a contrasting reason.
The mum, 34, smokes weed multiple times a day in her home office away from her six-year-old daughter – but has been labelled an 'unproductive drug addict' because of it.
But Britt lives in Michigan, US, where weed was legalised for recreational use in 2018, and she consumes it as a medication for anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD and insomnia.
And speaking to Daily Star about the backlash, she said: “I’ve been looked down a few times for smoking cannabis. But I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that there are mums who can drink and do whatever around their children – but bring cannabis out and you get looked at like a drug dealer.
“It would be cool if us cannabis mums could enjoy our joint while the other mums down a bottle of wine or two.”
As for the benefits of her habit, she told us: “Smoking weed for me has made me a much better person. I have a clear mind, I am active, energetic, creative, spontaneous, fun. Weed or not weed, you are still a great parent but with weed it’s like sprinkles on top”
Tattoo mum
Some people only have to look at Claire Elsie-Rose once to sadly make up their minds about her.
Claire, from Lincolnshire, has had people assume she is a criminal because of her 14 face tattoos but in reality she is a down to earth mum-of-four who takes care of her family by being a tattoo artist.
She used to fire back at her critics but now does not feel the need to justify her abilities as a mother. Speaking to The Sun, she said: “I have a successful business and I’m in a secure relationship – there’s nothing wild about my life and I love nothing more than a night in, in my pyjamas.”
Claire, 33, was first inspired to get a face tattoo when she was found to have what turned out to be a benign tumour on her lung. She said this made her realise that we don’t know how long we will live for – and so she bravely went ahead and got the ink she always wanted.
The body art enthusiast, who sometimes notices people cross the street to avoid her, added: “I used to find it quite triggering, and it was frustrating to be judged on my face tattoos, especially given the reason why I had them done. The last thing I’d want is my parenting to be judged – having a tattoo doesn’t affect what I’m like as a mum at all.”
Homeschool mum
Britain’s most off-grid parents know more than most what it is like to have their rearing methods attacked.
Last year we reported how Adele and Matt Allen, from Brighton, were reported to social services for the second time – seven years after trolls reported them for child cruelty after their infamous appearance on This Morning.
This happened in 2016 when their then one-year-old Ostara took a wee live on air before trolls branded their children “feral”.
But the family was again surprised by social services last year after a neighbour raised safety fears and Adele told the Daily Star: “We just had social services called the other day…
“We have moved into a new neighbourhood and our youngest four-year-old is a bit more volatile than the other two so when she gets emotional she lets the world know about it and makes quite a lot of noise.
“She has had quite a few crying outbursts and I don’t know exactly what neighbour did it, but someone reported us to social services saying she was an unhappy child.
“But we have quite a good relationship with social services having been reported by the public before for being in the press or whatever.
“They completely got it. Just a child being a child. A lot of the time, the people who complain don’t have children themselves so don’t have any idea about child development and realistic expectations of having a child at a certain age.”
Adele and Matt, 39 and 40, famously “unschool” their four children who are not vaccinated and are instead given natural and herbal remedies to combat sickness.
They also have no fixed schedules or bedtime or meal times and Adele argued that her unconventional parenting has worked wonders for her children who she said are autonomous and make their own choices.
Asked whether they still believe they made the right call by not sending their offspring to school, the mum told us: “I am still as sure about it now as I was when we decided to do it.
“As time goes by, the general mental health in children decreases and for me, from my own experiences, with children that are home educated in comparison to children in the school system, I think they are a lot more happy and settled.
“They are allowed to follow their own path and they don’t have the pressures and expectations of the school system. I have no regrets at all.”
Teen mum
Finally we have glamorous Teen Mom UK star Mia Boardman, now 27, who was slated online just for her dress sense.
Mia, from Southampton, said she had no interest in wearing traditionally mummy outfits and instead enjoyed dressing up the same way she did before becoming a mother.
Speaking to Fabulous, she said: “I like to wear the clothes I wear which some people say aren’t typical ‘mum’ clothes. And that makes me a bad mum? People have gone as far to message me and say my child should be taken away because of the way I am.”
But trolls also take her down for simply enjoying nights out when her daughter Marliya is with her dad. She said: “Life doesn’t stop when you have children, for me it has just started. But I’m constantly judged because I like to party.
“Of course you have to make so many sacrifices, but I believe you should be able to go out and do what you want as much as you want.”
The TV star, who has 320,000 Instagram followers, added: “Who cares whether you want to go out on a Saturday night and your child is with their father, dance all night with a short dress on, as long as you show up for your kids I think you do you.”
She also advised mums who had kids young to ignore negative people and stressed that you can be a great mother no matter what age you are.
